I will show how to use Excel to create dashboards within SharePoint web part pages – first with an export of a SharePoint list and then an import of a SharePoint list into Excel. We will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each method.
I will then show linking to the same SharePoint list data using the Power BI Desktop application and then publishing it to Power BI.
The meeting went really well – Tammy Clark started off showing how easily Power BI could connect to Facebook data.
I went second and used a SharePoint list I created with Helpdesk data to create dashboards using Excel and SharePoint web part pages. I then moved onto Power BI and ended with showing the cool iOS Power BI app (although it took some time to get it to project from my phone onto the screen).
Dan Evans then made a couple of announcements about Cortana and Power BI integration. Kerry Tyler finished off the night rocking our Power BI world with a demo that had us saying “wow!” 🙂
We finished the night at a new restaurant around the corner called Tupelo – fried green tomatoes, pork egg rolls (they were fantastic!!), and chicken and biscuits were enjoyed by all!
This coming December 8th I will be presenting to the Nashville SharePoint Users Group (nashvillesug.com) with the topic “Building SharePoint Solutions with Out of the Box Features and No Code”.
I will highlight the features within SharePoint that I use often to create beneficial solutions for companies around the country. With heavy emphasis on not using any code, I will demo solutions built using a SharePoint Online site.
Last night’s meeting was a lot of fun – we have a great turnout and I know I had a good time hanging out with my Nashville SharePoint friends.
We started off by talking about the Microsoft office move – the offices are moving to closer to downtown Nashville and will disrupt our meetings some next year. However, we already have plans for at least half of the time we will be without a meeting home, so stay tuned!

I am honored to be asked to speak at the November 20th Nashville SQL Server User Group. The meeting starts at 12 noon and I will be presenting “Tuning SQL Server for SharePoint”.
I will covering the best practices for SQL Server when it is used for SharePoint as well as doing a live SharePoint Server 2016 Technical Preview install.

I had a little fun with the promotion of my session at the event, given that #SPSTC was only a few days after #BackToTheFutureDay (October 21st, 2015).
The speaker dinner was excellent; great location, food, and a relaxed atmosphere. I had the opportunity to catch up with organizers and other speakers, some of which I hadn’t seen since the Microsoft Ignite conference in May. The organizing committee was awesome and we all had a great time enjoying the fun items in our speaker bags.
Saturday morning arrived and with over 500 people in attendance, I knew the day was going to be fun!
I had a room full of people eager to hear about Tuning SQL Server for SharePoint. The group had a lot of questions and was very interactive…and fun?
As is the norm at SPS events, there were some fabulous speakers delivering world-class content. After the giveaways, some of the organizers and speakers went to dinner to wrap-up a fun day. Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and other speakers – I am sure to return for the announced Spring 2016 edition of #SPSTC!
I was honored to speak at this year’s installment of SharePoint Saturday (SPS) Cincinnati – is was a spooktacular event!
Every year the organizers of #SPSCincy do a Halloween theme and this year, all the speakers were given football jerseys to help them with their costume. Others, well, they brought there own:
When I arrived at the event, the theme was in full swing – decorations and people dressed as their favorite gorilla, princess, or Star Wars character.
I attended several great sessions during the day – if you aren’t attending SPS events, you are really missing out on high-quality, free content! As I prepared for my session, I grabbed a quick pick with those initially in the room:

As it turns out, my last scheduled SQL Saturday event for 2015 was one of the closest – #SQLSat403 was my first time at the event held in Louisville, but I hope it won’t be the last!
The speaker dinner was held at a great restaurant that was known for is delicious food – even featured on one of the TV cooking shows! We all gathered around tables and talked shop, family, work, and stuffed our faces with a lot of pizza.
My session, Keys to Successful SharePoint Administration for the DBA, was slated later in the day, so I was able to attend several sessions throughout the day.
I had a smaller group of attendees, so the session was even more interactive than normal and I really enjoyed it. This is was the first time I attempted to use Microsoft Sway as a presentation method. The week prior I spent a lot of effort taking my existing slide deck into a ‘Sway’. I was getting Sway advice and tips from Mark Kashman and Chris Pratley, Microsoft GM (and founder of Sway and OneNote) and gave presenting with it a shot.

I started my presentation off and everything was going well, but Sway started advancing twice for every time I clicked once, so I had to abandon it 15 minutes into the session – I reverted back to using PowerPoint and I had no issues moving forward.
My session went well, except for the demo. I performed a SharePoint 2013 install using PowerShell but the installation didn’t finish. The most likely reason is that the virtual server host was busy (disk I/O). Oh well, the process had completed some steps and I was able to show databases without the GUID – which is kinda the point.
I also attended Mike Lawell’s Execution Plans for Mere Mortals session. A lot of the information was new for me, but that is why I love going to SQL Saturdays – I stretch my knowledge.
Right after Mike’s session, Robert Verell gave his second session of the day, Know Your Role(s)! One of the things Robert talked about was not giving db_owner rights to accounts. Which came up in my session when Robert asked if SharePoint service accounts, namely the Farm account, can have the db_owner rights removed from databases.
Special thank you to Hope Foley and the rest of the #SQLSatIndy team – it was a great event! I hope to be able to make the event next year.
It was a great honor to speak at SQL Saturday Atlanta this past Saturday. This event is known to be a good one with large attendance, high-quality speakers, and a great organizing committee. #SQLSat392 was a huge success!
This year’s theme was Back to the Future, and along with movie references in the event materials, speaker shirts, and signage, there was a DeLorean parked out front!
My session, Tuning SQL Server, went well – great conversation from the attendees and the topic was received really well. I learned a few things as well, so I will apply that to my upcoming speaking opportunities.
Robert Verell, who lives in the same part of Tennessee as I do, was a speaker as well and we had a little fun in the sun after the event.
