It was a great week in San Francisco! The #ITDEVConnections conference is a high-quality event that focuses on real-world technical sessions and the conference delivered. Both of my sessions had good participation from attendees – I enjoyed answering questions and getting to know everyone.
My first session topic was how you can plan and execute a transition from SharePoint Designer workflows to Microsoft Flow. The slides are available via the IT/Dev Connections website, but there was a question regarding the functionality gaps between Designer and MS Flow – in the session I mentioned a website to keep track of the gaps and here is the link: https://ms.flow.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/release-notes/#known-issues-and-resolutions
I also mentioned in the session that you can signup for the PowerApps Community Plan to gain access to PowerApps and Microsoft Flow for free.
On the same day as my first session, I participated on an expert panel discussion where we answered questions from attendees and via the moderator, Liam Cleary.
In my second session we looked at the business intelligence options in SharePoint, as well as Power BI. One of the great BI additions in SharePoint Online capabilities is column formatting that is currently rolling out. I demonstrated how you can easily use JSON code to style and enhance list views and how that can make a huge difference for your users.
There was also a great deal of conversation and questions from the attendees on how to share Power BI content and what licenses are required for sharing. There were a few questions during meeting that I answered but wanted to make sure I followed-up on them – the list of questions & my answers are below:
- There was a question about Microsoft Flow and if it was ‘on par’ with the features in SharePoint Designer for workflow. Here is the Known issues and resolutions page Microsoft is maintaining for Flow: https://ms.flow.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/release-notes/#known-issues-and-resolutions
- When Adding a Power BI report to a modern SharePoint page, are filters and options taken into account when show on the page? Yes they are!
- Is the Power BI report show on a modern SharePoint page a snapshot of the visuals or live data? If live, how is the data refreshed? The visuals shown are ‘live’ and will be refreshed when the report is changed or data is refreshed (scheduled within the Power BI service).
The Microsoft Ignite conference this year is being held in Orlando, Florida USA from September 25th – 29th. There will be tons of learning opportunities (1000+ hours) on topics ranging from IoT to Office 365 and SharePoint. The week is a great time of networking, learning, and finding new opportunities to get plugged into the community.
I will be part of the REgarding 365 team doing various activities, including broadcasting live interactions with attendees, speakers, and experts from around the world.
I am also very happy to be presenting two sessions at Microsoft Ignite this year: How to use Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Office 2016 to achieve more and Create a compelling dashboard in 20 minutes. I am once again happy to announce I will be speaking at SharePoint Fest – this time in Seattle on August 10th and 11th.
My first presentation will be Transition Your SharePoint Designer Workflows to Microsoft Flow on August 10th – with SharePoint Designer being deprecated, what are you supposed to do with your existing workflows? We will discuss how to transition your workflows to Microsoft Flow so you can begin to gain the benefits of the ever-expanding service.
On August 11th, I will present Business Intelligence Using SharePoint and Power BI – we will discuss all the Business Intelligence options we get out of the box with SharePoint and then look at how Power BI can rock your SharePoint BI implementation!

There were a few questions about Flow during the meeting that I wanted to make sure I followed-up with – the list of questions & my answers are below:
- Can Microsoft Flow monitor list item changes while the Flow is running – meaning can another Flow instance start if a user updates a list item while the Flow is already running.
- It is my understanding that if the Flow is currently running on a list item, another instance of the Flow will not start when a trigger occurs.
- Is there a trigger in Microsoft Flow for item deletes?
- No, just like SharePoint Designer workflows, there currently isn’t a way to detect item deletes.
- Is there a particular patch level for SharePoint 2013 that is required for Microsoft Flow to connect?
- I haven’t seen documentation noting a specific service pack or patch-level that is needed, but I will ask Microsoft for clarification and post the answer here.

During the SharePoint Summit this month, Microsoft shared the road-map for things to come for SharePoint on-premises and SharePoint Online. If you haven’t heard all the announcements, go watch the recording now. After watching and learning about what was coming, I have a few questions I would like to get answered and my friend Darrell Webster has arranged a way for us all to get those answers!
Darrell is participating in the Digital Workplace Conference in Auckland New Zealand and has invited a few of his Microsoft MVP friends to be part of a live panel asking questions of Microsoft’s own Mark Kashman.
