  • SharePoint Alert Settings

    Enable Alerts for SharePoint 2019, 2016, 2013

Allowing users to set alerts on SharePoint lists and libraries is the easiest way to keep users informed with what is going on within your intranet and team (collaboration) sites. This functionality has been a part of SharePoint for many versions and is an easy feature for users to take advantage of. That is, IF you have all the settings correct. Your first sign that alerts are not setup for use is when looking at the library (or list) tab in the ribbon, and you don't see the Alert me button in the Share & Track section. There are two settings you need to check: first you need to make…

  • Set the default open behavior for browser enabled documents

Set the default open behavior for browser enabled documents

I was recently asked how to configure documents that are in a SharePoint document library to open in their native application on the client computer instead of the browser. This question came from a user in SharePoint Online, but the answer is the same for those using SharePoint Server 2013, 2016, and 2019. There is a feature at the site collection level and a setting on every document library that you use to decide how documents get opened. I searched for an official Microsoft document detailing how this can be accomplished, but I could only find a post from 2014 that said it was for Office Web Apps – a…

  • Managing SharePoint Access Requests

    Managing SharePoint Access Requests

During a recent intranet deployment project, a client asked what would happen if she clicked the ‘Accept' link on the SharePoint access request email she received from one of her coworkers. She was a bit surprised by my answer and after that conversation, I thought it would be good to do a quick video explaining the process. What permissions do users get if you accept their access request? How are those users managed on the SharePoint site and is there a best practice for managing access requests? Watch the video below to find out!

  • OneDrive Setting Files to Read Only

OneDrive Sync Client Making Files Read-only

Drew Madelung asked a question on Twitter about why a lock icon was showing next to files being synced from a SharePoint document library to his computer via the OneDrive sync client. Hmm just noticed Files On-Demand lock icons via file explorer – @onedrive what are these for? pic.twitter.com/xa4jpC1ima — Drew Madelung (@dmadelung) April 10, 2018 After seeing the tweet, I did some testing and we found out why the lock icon was showing up – check out the short video below to find out more.
